What are you afraid of?

sumatran-tiger-730x-350“Fear keeps us focused on the past or worried about the future. If we can acknowledge our fear, we can realize that right now we are okay. Right now, today, we are still alive, and our bodies are working marvelously. Our eyes can still see the beautiful sky. Our ears can still hear the voices of our loved ones.”

~Thich Nhat Hanh

Have you ever started your day watching a newscast reporting a disaster or mass shooting that happened hundreds or thousands of miles away?  How did it make you feel?  Fear starts out small but can grow from a few butterflies in your stomach to an ominous feeling of dread that can leave you feeling paralyzed, if you let it.

When you feel fear, take a good look around you.  Are you really in a scary place or is it a sunny day?  Can you enjoy your day regardless of what’s happening in the rest of the world?  Stop irrational fears in their tracks. World peace begins with you!

A crisis can happen at any time and things can escalate.  However, fear and panic won’t serve you.  Stop, take a deep breath, and step back from the problem.  Assess the situation, take time to find solutions, or get help.  A calm mind, determination, and collaboration with other problem solvers will lead you more quickly to a solution.

Recall times when you overcame major hurdles in your life.  Remind yourself of times you overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles.  Go for a walk, do Yoga, or go to sleep and see how things look the next day.  Refrain from acting in haste.

Shift your energy by focusing on courage, confidence, and peace of mind.  Watch a Youtube video or a movie about overcoming adversity.

Does life seem too daunting and insurmountable?  Break things down into small pieces.  Recall Lao Tzu’s famous quote”

“The journey of a thousand miles
begins with a single step.”

Try a little self-hypnosis by reading the following words a few times:

Picture yourself on a beach, digging your toes into the sand.  Take a deep breath, then imagine you feel the warmth of the sun on your skin.  Quiet your mind and allow yourself to feel waves of relaxation flowing from the tips of your toes, all the way up your body, to the top of your head.  Take a deep breath and hold it for a moment.  Now exhale, and as you do, feel every muscle in your body relax.  You feel calm, you feel relaxed, and in control.  You are calm.  You are relaxed.  You are in control.  Every day you are more and more at ease.

Make a wonderful day!
